Some of my favorite things

Now you don't have to put holes in your wall! (This is a huge deal for my dad.)

Granted, I haven't ever removed the strips to see what it does to the paint, but from what I gathered from google, most people say they remove easily.

They are easier to determine where to place than a nail (in my opinion), and you also have some flexibility as to where exactly to put it, which is a very good thing for me. It seems like even though I try, I always end up a little bit off, so these took care of that problem. They also make it really easy to level the picture.

My cordless iron. Today I ironed something on the floor and used the vertical steaming on Jon's church shirt. It is marvelous. I love it.

My rice cooker
. I am currently cooking a bit of rice for dinner with some veggies in the steaming basket. Granted, I could accomplish the same thing on the stove, but for some reason I love this. Maybe it's that it's cooking 2 things at once. I don't know, but it just seems like less hassle for some reason.

Some of my 2009 goals

How fun to show off what I suck at!
But Jon will be happy that I am writing these down (and as an added bonus, I have a leg up on him and his ever persistent insistence on writing goals down). AND I have all of your faithful readers to be held accountable to. GREAT.

So why share my goals on my blog? Well, I always find that seeing what other people want to work on inspires me to work on similar things (I don't always do well at remembering ALL of my flaws). So I guess I figure that if I'm sharing, I may be helping someone out in some way or another.

So here they are people: Things I don't want to suck at anymore!

-get in shape. I may be skinny, but I'm so not in shape. It would be nice to be toned and have more endurance!

-be better at keeping my house clean (The Roomba is surprisingly motivating! We cleaned the craft room today just so that the Roomba would have somewhere to vacuum!)

-spend less time on the internet and find other things to do with my time

-make more stuff for the Etsy store on a consistent basis

-take time to play with Alex every day... whatever he wants to do.

-be more consistent with making dinner

-give my day to day life an easy routine to stick to it

-be better at budgeting and sticking to it

So we're 2 weeks into the new year and I've been aware of having these goals, but they haven't really been implemented because they aren't spelled out on exactly how they are going to be accomplished.

So I'm going to lay it out here.

1- fitness. Ride the exercise bike every other day for 30 minutes. And then buy a wii fit and do aerobics :). Or pop in the latin dance VHS (YES! VHS!) and do that some of the days. Either way, 30 minutes every other day.

2- Lay out the cleaning list every day and make sure everything is picked up before I do anything else. Baby steps are allowed.

3-Well the cleaning and Etsy-ing should help with that :)

4-List one new item every week, unless it's a bigger project. Try to log at least 10 hours of making time in per week.

5- twenty minute "special time". I'd like to do this every day sometime between breakfast and lunch.

6- Plan ahead earlier than 5pm. Make a list of meals for the week and post them (and the prep time) on the fridge. Don't fall back on the easiest stuff. Shoot for starting dinner by 4:30ish every day.

7- routine. This is going to be a HUGE thing for me.
Wake up with Alex. (see? I said it was going to be a huge thing for me). Movie for him and 30 minute exercise time for me. Shower. Make bed. Alex and Mama dressed. Breakfast for both of us. House clean up and Alex play with toys. 20 minutes of Special Time. Lunch at 12:30. Nap at 1/1:30. Start dinner prep. Have dinner ready by 5:30/6pm. Clean up dishes. Family time. Bed time. Free time. Start going to bed by 11. (anyone who knows me shocked to read that?!)

8- use budgeting site every day to be aware of what is being spent. Plan larger purchases in advance.

Isn't it romantic?

This is Alex brushing the grass off of my shirt from way back in October when we went to the state fair. I especially love the background music.
AND they had swan boats! How awesome is that?!

Isn't it romantic? from Jon M on Vimeo.

So I'm going to be cutting some corners

Today I got out of bed and there were my curtain rods for my bedroom windows AND the fabric for my valance for my bathroom, staring at me. Begging for me to put them up. I've only had them for, oh, 4 months.
And then I remembered the fabulousness of this blog. Particularly, her "mistreatments". (just skip the first link and go right to the second one!).

Joy filled my little heart as I realized that there was no need for the sewing machine and worrying about straight seams and the inevitable unpicking that would occur and HOURS spent hemming all 4 sides of two very long drapery panels. All I would need to do is pull out my hot glue gun and I could get them all done in one day instead of weeks.

I think my favorite thing about the mistreatment route is that precious fabric doesn't need to be cut into. This is very good if you happen to be moving or just decide to use the fabric from your window for something else. I'm all about preservation of cute fabric so that it can serve other purposes!

So perhaps tomorrow I will get started on my mistreatments so I can have actually drapes in my room after two and half years of living here.

Oh! AND I have some adorable fabric for a valance that I can't wait to get put up in my craft room.
Hmm... I should probably get my other 2 valances for the downstairs up at some point in this window treatment frenzy...

And since I haven't posted enough this weekend...

Here's a link to see pictures from our last trip to Sea World this season. This was I think the first weekend in December. And, no worries, we cut Alex's hair the next week. :)

Oops

I've been meaning to blog this for a while (that statement just made me realize that I'm a bit pathetic...) because of it's hilarity.

After this happened, Jon said, "You know, my mom always told me that would happen but I don't think I was ever sure I really believed her".

Well honey, it's true.

OH! I should add that this was ME and NOT Jon that did this. :) And I was making peanut butter bars. Really? Wire wisks will bend when you're trying to mix cookie dough at high speeds with a Bosch? REALLY? Ya... duh.

I got some new ones for Christmas (and some cookie paddles for my birthday so that this kind of disaster can be prevented in the future), but I'm kind of sad to part with these. It's kind of like a trophy. It reminds me of the tortilla chip shaped burn marks in one of my old cookie sheets that I had a hard time getting rid of as well.

Pillow Fight!

Okay, not really a pillow fight.
But a cute video I found of Alex and Jon when Alex was about 11 months old. I love his little laugh.

It's fun to go back and watch old videos- especially ones I don't remember!

Picture Love

Jon and I have a new primary class, so I was finding some pictures to do a little getting to know you thing for our class to tell a little bit about us.
I found this picture from one of our trips to Six Flags and vamped it up a little.

Hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

Fabulous things to come home to after a vacation

So there we were driving on the lovely skinny little road with the annoying stop sign to our house on our way back from Utah when we discovered something wonderful took the place of the stop sign.

One of these guys! Except rotate it 90 degrees cause we're cool like that in Texas.

It was a wonderful surprise! Cars would get so held up there, so it was nice to just zoom on through.
Today I nearly stopped there out of habit, even though the light was green. I guess having a stop sign around for 2.5 years of living here really does have an effect on you.

Other fabulous news:
The Super Target 3 minutes away has an open date of March 8th. YES!!!!
The Best Buy 3 minutes away has an open date of February 27th!
There is an open Carl's Jr. actually in Austin (down in Dripping Springs I believe...)
AND the Carl's Jr. over by Kenn and Amy's house is ALMOST done!!! I have been waiting for this day for a LONG time. Mmm... Carl's Jr. ...
Oh! And they started construction on a beach area and boat ramp on the lake that borders our community. Fabulous! (more draw to move to our community is always a good thing)

Not as fabulous:
24 Hour Fitness 3 minutes away is on hold. Or cancelled or something. In other words, it won't be built until the economy improves.
The movie theater 3 minutes away has experienced the same fate.

Not that we use either of those things, but they would have been good for the area and to help our house value go up.

Ham? Moe Ham?

Here's Alex enjoying his lunch of ham.

Ham? Moe ham? from Jon M on Vimeo.

What the....?

Yesterday Alex and I went outside and played in his sand table for a bit. I happened to look over where he was playing and there was a large sized dog bone, half eaten and full of moisture from whenever it rained.

Uhh.... how did that get there?

Sticker removal

I am reclaiming my cute lapdesk!
(the black and white one. Cute huh?)

The "bravo!", "great", and farm animal stickers my two year old put on it last week on our road trip are coming off. The silly putty egg that is in the cup holder is being put back with the playdoh and both will be resigned back to their places at the kitchen table or the coffee table. Alex's wireless play mouse (thanks to our last bag of crap from woot!) that he likes to pretend is working mommy's laptop is being put back in the toy box.

My cup of Welch's Sugar Free Dark Berry Juice (a new favorite discovered tonight!) is in my mommy cup in my own cup holder next to my laptop without any little fingers trying to type while I am or touch everything on the screen and ask who every one is in every picture on every website on my very own very sticker, coloring, and playdoh free lap desk.

I love bedtime.

You know you're getting old when...

Most of your gifts for birthdays and Christmas's are appliances or other things for your house. And when you actually WANT those things.
I remember getting stuff for my mom through the years... know what genre I remember giving her most? Appliances.

This year I turned 26 (SO old, right?!) and for my birthday I got... a cordless iron! And I was DANG excited about that iron (and love it).

Last year for Christmas I got a new blender (cause mine didn't have enough speeds. It had 2.) and a little vacuum/mop for my kitchen floor.

This year for Christmas I got a new set of kitchen knives and sheets.

And I was EXCITED about all of these.

Whatever happened to the days of wanting clothes, cds/music, shoes (okay, I still probably want shoes), discmans/cd players, hair stuff etc.?

I guess I'm getting old.

Apparently, it's 82 degrees

So here I was thinking that our house was a little chilly at 72 and that it must be about 60 outside or something.
So I got curious and looked at a weather website.

Umm... it's 82 actually.

So alex and I went and sat outside. I think we're going to go on a bike ride in a minute.

I LOVE TEXAS!

Grocery shopping with Alex

Going grocery shopping with Alex is always an adventure.

You have to keep your eyes on whatever he has insisted on holding for the moment so that it doesn't get opened.

You have to keep a constant flow of foods he likes going into the front with him to hold.

Bread has to be last or at least followed by something more interesting.

Grapes are a for sure thing he'll want to snack on while shopping. So either get them first so they are buried (and so he can have a few and be done), or get them last.

I guess the above goes for anything he wants to eat right away.

Don't get too close to either side of the aisle or you will be putting stuff back on the shelf for awhile.

Or you will be buying something that's been opened that you really didn't want to or plan on buying.

Be able to quickly distract with something else we are going to go and find.

It's a good time.
My favorite thing from today was fulfilling Alex's new love of ham. At my cousin Shane's wedding luncheon, they had ham with honey mustard. Alex hadn't really ever eaten ham with enthusiasm before, but the honey mustard must have done it for him. He ate SO MUCH ham that day.
And would insist on more. "moe ham?" It's actually really funny to hear him say it. I'll have to do a video :).

Anyway, so we decided to find some thickly sliced deli ham for Alex to eat since he was such a big fan of ham. We're always happy to find something that he likes to eat these days. We were trying to find the best/least expensive kind and Alex was sitting in the cart demanding, "ham! moe ham!". We finally found the one we wanted and handed it to him and asked him what that was and he said "HAM!" in just the happiest most excited voice.
Who knew ham would be so wonderful.

We also had a good laugh when just as we were walking by an endcap in the frozen foods section Alex shouted out, "PANTATES!". There happened to be a bag of frozen pancakes right there. I don't know if he actually saw them and realized what they were or if he was just doing his usual thing of asking for pancakes every day (he had already shouted out pantates once before in the store).

Our house is once again filled with food and we have all of Alex's favorites to eat again. Yay!

Guess I should start blogging about Christmas...

I uploaded this video last night. We have a lot more videos and pictures to come soon!
I'll work on getting some pictures up, but we have mostly video and we're limited on how much video we can upload on Vimeo.

Anyway, here is Alex riding around on Grandpa and Grandma's awesome wiggle cars. Excuse the whining and orneriness... he didn't get much nap time in that day.

we LOVE and I mean L-O-V-E woot offs!!!!

Let me start by explaining woot.com. They are a website that sells one item a day until it's sold out. And they don't sell anything else until the next day.

At the end of every month they have what they call a Woot Off. For the woot off, they still sell only one item at a time, but when it sells out, they put a new item up. This goes on for at least a day and it's very fun. There is a lot of random stuff that comes up and most of it is stuff for great prices.

Usually, at the end of a woot off, they end with the option to buy a "bag of crap". For $1. And you could get who knows what in it. They usually sell out in about a minute. You can buy up to 3 bags of crap and then it's $5 shipping.

A few months ago, we were lucky enough to score 3 bags of crap. We got the beloved "monkey soap", a Yanni biography that made a great Christmas gift from my dad, various mp3 players etc.
We thought it was a once in a lifetime score of luck.

Until a couple of weeks ago when Jon (and a couple of his coworkers actually... can you tell what they do at work?) scored 3 bags of crap each.

Our box arrived today.
It was quite large and I so wanted to open it before Jon got home, but he made me wait.

Contents:
a camera case
a collectible little lifesavers ceramic box (weird and random)
4 little stick on LED lights that go on the back of a cell phone (also random)
a joystick (cause we are such big gamers around here...)
and...
...
...
...
...
...
...
...
...
A ROOMBA!!!

That's a robotic vacuum people! That we got for $8!!! How sweet is that?!

Have I mentioned that I've wanted one for quite some time? Ya. We are pretty excited!

Even better is that roombas are long running jokes on woot.com because they seem to come up in every woot off.
So when I told Jon that we got a good sized box from woot he was like, "A ROOMBA?!" Without really knowing that it was an actual Roomba.
Good times.

a good report

I am happy to say that the drive back went much better than the first time around.

We weren't as sick (still had some lingering congestion), we took a 3ish hour break to sleep in a hotel parking lot, and there wasn't any throwing up and trying to find an open gas station at 2 am.
We did have some pretty smelly diarrhea from Caleb, but luckily that only lasted for the first day and was better by dinner.

The kids were pretty good and there wasn't as much screaming as last time.

The amount of time to be in the car still sucked. And we decided that it's probably best to stop and stay the night in a hotel to break it up and get a full nights sleep in in an actual bed. It was nice to avoid the extra cost of doing so though.

Thank goodness we don't have to do it again for another year!

pan-tate

Alex, following the footsteps of his Uncle Brent, has a new found love for pancakes.
He had them for breakfast and lunch today.
And then again at about 9:00 pm.

He was awake playing with MaNa (grandma) and all of the sudden requested pancakes. He was very insistent.
And he ate all of his dinner earlier.

So we said, "why not?"

So Alex ended his day with a belly full of pancakes that his awesome grandma made for him.

In other news of the day, Jon and I put together one of our three 500 piece puzzles that we got today from the dollar store.
And I got to eat at Carl's Jr.
SO GOOD!

And Christmas was good. More on that later.

The pink/black quilt is in my etsy store!

It turned out really cute.
I had one final bump that had to be solved with free motion quilting (which is yet to be done), but other than that- it is done!

I am in love with the pattern and the ragging on it. And the colors. I love this quilt.
Hopefully someone will love it enough to buy it!

So go click on the little button over there for my store and check it out in it's finished state!

Sick and Tired

Want to ask Jon how the trip went?

"It was HELL."

Oh, well that's nice.

See the title for the explanation.

since I'm up and who knows when I will next be blogging

I took this from Sherri's blog.

4 Words that crack me up:
4. Ridiculous (especially Alex saying it)
3. Damn
2. Moisture (thanks to Jon)
1. Penetration when used in sports

okay?

Whenever Alex chokes/bonks/coughs etc. I ask him if he's okay.
He's now taken that role upon himself and when he does one of the above he'll say, "okay?". I then have to ask if he's okay and then he says "uh huh!"

It makes me laugh every time.

Dance Party

This is one of Alex and I's favorite after nap activities.

And the boy has a love for the r&b like his mama (he always has actually- that's always what got him moving when he was younger). That and Taylor Swift (which is probably just because it's at the top of my playlist).
I did get him jamming to some All American Rejects today though.

We also enjoy dancing to Jack Johnson (Alex's number one requests are Bubbly Toes and "Monkey Song" aka Upside Down.) and the classic from his naked bum dancing days... Keith Urban.

Perhaps I'll enlighten you all with a number from Alex and myself. I can't decide if waiting for my voice to come back would be a good thing or not. At least with not having a voice I have an excuse to sound horrible when I sing a long.

So remember those Oreo Truffles?

from this post?
Umm...
SO GOOD!!!

Mom and Tawna... we will DEFINITELY have to make some of these while I am there because I gave some of the ones I made away. And I could eat at least 20 in a day.

Right here

Alex had a bit of a rough night last night. We had to go in several times. I think he has bad dreams or something because he totally talks and cries in his sleep.
Anyway, we heard him crying and saying, "no thank you" and were laughing about what he could be dreaming about. Seriously, how cool would it be to be able to see what your kids dream (and think as well)?
I went in and he patted his crib mattress next to him and said, "mama lay right here". Awww... I thought it was so cute that he wanted me to get in his crib and lay with him.

I just took him out and we sat in his chair for a minute before he cried and wanted to go back in his crib. Random.

Favorite Christmas Song

In our house, we love "O Holy Night".

Specifically, when Celine Dion sings it. I am always beyond excited to put in my Celine Dion Christmas CD and crank this one up. It is always the first Christmas CD that is listened to.

Even if you don't like Celine Dion, this is a powerful song. The last part of it is incredible! Forever thanks to Zak who got me this CD for Christmas years and years ago when I asked him to.

and now off to listen to more artists singing O Holy Night!

My work in progress

Photobucket

This is what I've been working on since Wednesday.

Cute eh? Yes. But you're not the one cutting all of those lovely seams on it. (the top little bit is done, the bottom is not).

This thing has taken me so freaking long. I've had to put it down multiple times and take a breather for a few months.

On Wednesday I got all of the borders sewn on. And the next day I started clipping the seams to rag it. Fast forward to Friday night and I have 2 of my 5 rows of blocks done. 2 of 5!!! Holy freak.
My scissors are pretty okay. They're doing the work. They're baby stepping. And thankfully my scissors have a spring in them! I still have a near blister anyway.

Still, it is pretty much adorable and I can't wait to get it done!

Funny thing- I have enough fabric to make a second one like this for myself should I one day have a female child (because it's so freaking cute) AND I got some adorable fabric to make Alex a big flannel rag quilt, but after snipping all of these damn seams, I'm reconsidering. If I didn't love the end result so much, I'd just scrap those projects. But the rag quilts are just so dang cute!

Pictures of the finished product to be posted soon hopefully! I think I'm going to bribe Jon to help me do some cutting.

Lovin' this!

I was watching Eli Stone online today and they had the beginning of this song in the show and it was AMAZING. I had to turn it way up loud and listen to it 3-4 times I liked it so much.

There's just something about powerful singers and the orchestra in the background. I love pretty much any song like that. (please let me know if you know of any great ones).

Anyway, turn it up and enjoy!

Save handmade children's products

I haven't blogged about this, but need to. My little Etsy shop over there ---->---->
is filled with children's products.
Essentially, this law would make a $4000 per toy test MANDATORY. If I use a different fabric, that item would have to be tested.
It's easy for big manufacturers to do this as they just have to get 1 toy in the batch tested and then go from there.
This is flat out a law that would promote big business and not small, local, handmade sellers.

Even some larger companies (but not the big name ones) that make an effort to sell only organic and natural toys have said that if this law goes into place, they will be forced out of business.

We all want toys and kids products to be safe, but I feel this law goes too far in doing so.

Here is the article from this site:

Help Save Handmade Toys in the USA from the CPSIA

The issue:

In 2007,
large toy manufacturers who outsource their production to China and other developing countries violated the public's trust. They were selling toys with dangerously high lead content, toys with unsafe small part, toys with improperly secured and easily swallowed small magnets, and toys made from chemicals that made kids sick. Almost every problem toy in 2007 was made in China.

The United States Congress rightly recognized that the Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC) lacked the authority and staffing to prevent dangerous toys from being imported into the US. So, they passed the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA) in August, 2008. Among other things, the CPSIA bans lead and phthalates in toys, mandates third-party testing and certification for all toys and requires toy makers to permanently label each toy with a date and batch number.

All of these changes will be fairly easy for large, multinational toy manufacturers to comply with. Large manufacturers who make thousands of units of each toy have very little incremental cost to pay for testing and update their molds to include batch labels.

For small American, Canadian, and European toymakers, however, the costs of mandatory testing will likely drive them out of business.

  • A toymaker, for example, who makes wooden cars in his garage in Maine to supplement his income cannot afford the $4,000 fee per toy that testing labs are charging to assure compliance with the CPSIA.
  • A work at home mom in Minnesota who makes dolls to sell at craft fairs must choose either to violate the law or cease operations.
  • A small toy retailer in Vermont who imports wooden toys from Europe, which has long had stringent toy safety standards, must now pay for testing on every toy they import.
  • And even the handful of larger toy makers who still employ workers in the United States face increased costs to comply with the CPSIA, even though American-made toys had nothing to do with the toy safety problems of 2007.

The CPSIA simply forgot to exclude the class of toys that have earned and kept the public's trust: Toys made in the US, Canada, and Europe. The result, unless the law is modified, is that handmade toys will no longer be legal in the US.

If this law had been applied to the food industry, every farmers market in the country would be forced to close while Kraft and Dole prospered.

How You can Help:

Please write to your United States Congress Person and Senator to request changes in the CPSIA to save handmade toys. Use our sample letter or write your own. You can find your Congress Person here and Senator here.

swimming

Alex was playing with his cars today and was laying on his tummy. He then randomly started scooting around on his belly and saying, "swimming!". Don't ask me where he learned that, but it was pretty funny.
Here is a little clip of what I could catch of it.

Take a nap?

I guess our routine must be working because Alex realizes when it's nap time and asks to go to sleep by saying, "take a nap?"
I thought it was so cute tonight when we finished eating a later dinner and got done cleaning up it was 7:15, which I was unaware of. Alex grabbed his blankie and told me, "take a nap?". I looked over at the clock to find that it was indeed time to go to bed.

Whoever thought I, of all late staying up people, would have a 2 year old that tells me when to put him to bed? He must have inherited my love of sleeping.
But not sleeping in. Boo.

teho-foe mickey (careful mickey)

At the store today Alex and I ran into a "plush" Mickey Mouse bath pal dressed in a swimming suit and snorkel mask and tube. Alex has a slight Mickey Mouse obsession, so we picked him up and took him with us.
For the rest of the time we were in the store, Alex had the best time having Mickey "swim" along the edges of the shopping cart (which of course I couldn't hold on to the part you usually push on because I was in the way of Mickey's swimming).
Alex was very good at telling Mickey to be careful. It made me smile.

That reminds me of how I often tell Alex (usually when I have him entertain himself with being a monkey jumping on mama's bed when mama wants to stay in bed for a little while), "be careful monkey boy" and he usually repeats it back "teho-foe monkey boiee". Very funny.

Ahh! I need videos of these things because I just love them. I just love so many of the little things he does and says right now!

Mr. Copycat

I live with a little copy cat.
Not only does he say things that I say (like when I call other drivers ridiculous or say crap), he also likes to do things his daddy does.

He has taken to drying himself off with the towel like Daddy does after he takes a bath or shower.
If he could, he would try to shave (I think he'll be getting the fake shaving kit for Christmas).
He types and uses the touchpad (with 1 finger even!) alternately when Mama steps away from her laptop.

And this morning, he got Daddy's empty contact case off of the counter and put in his "contacts".
It was so funny to watch him take his little 2 year old finger and put it near his eye like he was putting contacts in.

The unfortunate thing about headphones at naptime

One of my new favorite things to do is plug headphones in and listen to my playlist REALLY loud during nap time. LOVE it.
One bad thing.
I can't sing as loud as I want.
And it's really fun to sing with headphones in because you have to sing loud to hear yourself.

Oh well... guess the loud singing will have to wait until Alex is awake. He's quite the little singer himself. :)

goodbye pumpkin pie

*sniff*sniff*

I just ate the last piece of pumpkin pie. And I want more. Do people make pumpkin pies for Christmas? They should!

Something I LOVE

I, being an amateur in photoshop, discovered long ago the beauty of actions.
Actions are pre-recorded sets of actions that are automatically applied to a photo, that you can then tweak to fit your particular picture. It's kind of like a macro in a word document.

While I wish I just knew what things to do to pictures to beef them up, sadly, I do not. And it would take a LOT of time to learn. And a lot of time to experiment. THUS, my LOVE of actions.

Yesterday I found some wonderful actions from the marvelous Rita, which she has posted on her blog/site. Here they are, the CoffeeShop free actions for photoshop CS and Elements.

And since you're dying to see what they can do, here is my family's picture before and after that I'm working on for the family calendar. This took all of about 5 minutes and gave me fabulous results. It helped things that it was a good picture to begin with and was taken outdoors with some fabulous color to punch up.
I used the vivid action and a combo of the bright and vivid layers were visible at different opacities.

Fabulous huh? It certainly makes my photo editing life easier! No worries Mom- it will take me all of an hour to get these pics edited and ready to go into the template (which I'm hoping we get a power supply for our external drive soon so I can go and find the calendar template I have... *hint* jon *hint*)

Random quotes from church today

Ella to Carrie:

"I need to whisper something in your ear."

*walks over to Carrie*

"John McCain came to my birthday when I was turning four. Don't tell anyone."

I think we know who Dan and Angela voted for. If Senator McCain was making visits to my kid's birthday party then I'd have voted for him too!

------

Jon overhearing Colton and Andrew:

"One Jedi could have taken out all the Lamanites."

"Think of what Yoda could do. Think of what Mace Windu could do!"

------

This last one isn't a quote but you know the stereotypical church lady who is really nice and quiet?

We have one of those in the third hour but she's so quiet that she ends up fighting a losing battle with slumber each and every week. It's one of my weekly highlights watching her doze in and out of consciousness.

I love church.

So I saw Twilight

And I actually liked it. Weird, since the previews made it look totally cheesy to me. Cheesy and scripted and bad acting. But with the whole movie overall, it wasn't any of those things. I would see it again even!

And I want this freaking jacket that Bella wore! So cute!

"dobb oh dobb oh dobb oh" -alex

Happy Thanksgiving! (a day late)

We had a very long day of cooking followed by a very delicious dinner. We're so grateful to have such great friends in Texas!

and as a p.s. check out my etsy shop. My good friend Lynsey and I are teaming up to keep a more constant supply and variety. She's in the process of adding some adorable little girl's aprons this weekend!

Black Friday Planning

I have spent much of my day pouring over this super helpful xcel spreadsheet from slickdeals for black friday ads.
The only unfortunate thing is that I like to see the pictures in the ads. I've been able to see quite a few of them on different websites and I got some in the mail today.
We have our eyes on several things that we needed anyway.

Mostly, I like going for the sake of nostalgia, even though I may only be getting a few things.

Every year me, my mom and sister, and my aunts all met up at my Grandma's house in the wee early morning hours to embark on the madness. I've stood in many lines waiting for things to open. Back before everyone had cell phones, we all had hand radios that we'd talk to each other on through the store. It was an awesome strike team. We sent one person to go get one thing, another to get something else (all in multiples for anyone on the team that wanted those same things) and then we'd run up and get into line. It was CRAZY. And so fun.

Last year I took my friend Amy on her first excursion and she had a blast.

This year, Jon is wanting (well... needing) tires, so he's going to venture out with me. Good times! Best thing about Black Friday shopping at 4 am in TEXAS... it's not as cold as in Utah!

Is it silly that I've watched this about 5 times today and giggled every time?

I want to eat these.... badly

Who wants to come over for an oreo truffle making party?! Hmm... I have a feeling these could be a fun mommy/daughter project over Christmas (with both of my moms since I know they are probably both drooling over these. AND I certainly wouldn't mind a double dose...)

If you don't/can't come over, here are links to recipes on Bakerella and an adapted easier one from Kraft Foods.

Working on reverence

For those readers of my blog who are in my ward, yes, that was my child that yelled out "YAAAY!" and "GOOD JOB" after the opening and sacrament hymns today (you know... that time period where youre transitioning to a prayer and it's totally quiet?).
And we weren't just in the back. We were in the back few rows in the middle section of the chapel. I'm pretty sure that we produced a few snickers. I know I had a hard time listening to the prayer and trying to stop snickering.

I wish I could say how embarrassed I was, but I really wasn't. I thought it was pretty darn hilarious and had a hard time teaching him to be reverent because that would stop the random yay's, hooray's, and good jobs after the songs. And I think it's cute. Irreverent as it may be.

I also highly enjoyed Alex leading the music and singing along during the whole hymn. He's adorable.

Another undefeated season for the Utes

How 'bout them apples?!

We had an enjoyable game, but I do admit the BYU/Utah game is more fun when it's close. It would have been closer had there not been so many turnovers.

So go Utes for being 2 time BCS busters!

Crafting Addict

I just subscribed to, like, 10 new crafting blogs tonight. I need to add buttons for them because there are so many great ones all chock full of creativity and fun ideas. I love love LOVE the energy and lightness of heart that I get from reading crafty-based blogs. So inspiring. It makes me so happy.

On my list of things tomorrow:
-*- clean my house like a mad woman so I can craft in peace without any nagging in my own brain about what I haven't done.
-*- soak and cook some beans for chicken taco soup to feed to our friends
-*- enjoy a rousing game of football
-*-figure out a way to incorporate sewing while watching a rousing game of football

Also, as if my heading the crafting special interest group through church wasn't enough, I have this urge to host "Crafternoon" parties. My one obstacle with this is children. What do I do with mine and what do those attending do with theirs. Can the children just be trusted to all play quiet together for an hour or so while their moms craft away? Hmm... Any thoughts on how to orchestrate such a thing would be stupendous.

I also want to figure out a way to involve more of my neighbors and other moms in the area. Austin is a very crafty place and some days I feel a little bummed that I don't live downtown and am so far removed from the crafty goodness that is found in abundance here. Most of the blogs I added today are by fabulous crafsters in Austin. Anyway, I know there has to be more mom's with a crafty heart like my own lurking out here in the suburbs! Now... how to find them...

And what to do for Crafternoon parties.

And the children. Oh what to do with the children.

The Scarlet Pimpernel

If you have yet to watch this film, you must. I have fond memories watching this in AP European History my junior year with Troy, Ryan and Eric while laughing and fawning over The Scarlet Pimpernel's pimptackular nature. (no, you may not question the validity of the word 'pimptackular')

Not only does it feature one of the smoothest men of all time, it also features megababe (tm) JANE SEYMOUR!!!

This also makes Somewhere In Time required viewing. In fact, anything with Jane Seymour is required viewing.

Closer to 30 than 25

That's what my sister pointed out to me on my 26th birthday yesterday. Thanks Cind!

I know y'all are just dying to know about my day. It's long, but everyone always asks about how your birthday was. This is just the Cindy (in detail) version. :)

Alex woke up at 7. Luckily, he loves watching "Pig Movie" (Charlotte's Web) every morning, so that's what he did. But he was ornery and the day started out with much wailing and gnashing of teeth.
I had to be out of bed by 7:45 for a 9 am appointment. So I didn't get to sleep in on my birthday (although sleeping in for me would be like 10:30 instead of my regular 9 am) and I had to deal with an ornery boy.

After my appointment, Alex and I did have a good time hitting up Joann's and Hobby Lobby, so that was a plus!

We had yummy lunch at home and then nap time. Which is usually a wonderful time for me and I was looking forward to watching some shows online. Well, Alex decided that since he woke up so early, he didn't need a nap. And that peeing in his bed would be a great present for Mama.

So 1 hour after he went in for his nap, I had to go up and discovered the pee. All sheets and blankets came out and new ones went in. Awesome. We read another story and Alex, of course, didn't want to lay back down and sleep. So he cried of and on for an hour.
I went back up again and told him that he needed to lay down and sleep and that I wasn't coming up anymore in my mean mommy voice.
I still don't think he slept, but he didn't make a sound for the last hour.

We then went and met Jon for dinner at Red Robin (they do a free birthday burger. You just have to sign up on their website.) and it was delicious of course. Our awesome waitress, toward the end of our eating, brought out 2 more baskets of fries for us, all of which went home with us. She was also great enough to offer to send home some of their campfire sauce that we dip the fries in which made her awesome.

I got home and gathered together my crafting stuff for our craft special interest group from church. It was at the house of an older lady in my ward and I was the only one there. She's about my grandma's age and I had the best time spending an hour and a half chatting with here. It was a highlight of my week actually.

When I got home from that, Jon surprised me by telling me to open my presents. I totally wasn't expecting anything, so it made my day. He got me some pillows to go on our guest "bed" couch, a new apple slicer, and my cordless iron will be here in a week or so! I am SO EXCITED for my cordless iron!!!
I had no idea when he even went to get me presents and he told me that after I left for my craft night he asked Alex if he wanted to go on a "Secret Drive". Jon said that Alex was all excited about it. So they went to WalMart and Baskin Robin's. Jon said he was going to get me an ice cream cake, but their small ones were $21, so he just got me yummy ice cream instead. Which I was just as happy with.

So go Jon for being so awesome and surprising me with presents. You made my birthday wonderful!

I could so see Aubrey doing this

Aubrey is my niece and she is quite the chatter box.

Anyway, I saw this on youtube today and thought it was awesome.
I need to get Alex's performance level up!

DANGEROUS!

Here's Alex dancing and singing his favorite song! :)

Aaaannnddd.... we're back.

Wow... It's been awhile!

My apologies! It was a crazy busy week last week, but nothing really that exciting happened enough to blog about.

And I had to wait to get cute pictures so that I could blog about...

THIS!

I cut off about 10-12 inches (which will be donated). Jon loves the blonde and it's definitely growing on me. I've never had a large desire to be blonde, but Jon has been telling me how hot it would be for about 4 years now. So I decided I would indulge him. This is step 1 in the transformation :).

OH! And this is my before shot. That happens to be a really good picture of me, so whenever I look at it I kind of miss my long hair.

Photobucket

BUT that hair was gross and I LOVE how nice my short hair feels.
I also love that it only takes 20 minutes to air dry and I can still get fabulous results with my straightener without having to do the whole blow dry upside down and put in a poofing up creme (my hair is pretty flat). I was quite happy with how well it worked out to do my hair today.

Although sleeping on it certainly does a number. Guess it's back to the every day hair styling for me. *sigh* goodbye old routine of brush and ponytail.

I know... having a private blog is good

But it makes it such a pain in the butt for me to read your blog.

You see, you can't subscribe to private blogs on google reader, which is where I do all of my blog reading. And if it's not on there, I have problems putting your blog in my bookmarks and remembering to periodically check it for updates.
I either have to check every day or less often and if you've posted more in that less often time period, I have to spend a lot of time catching up.

I understand the reasons for privacy. But just know it makes it hard for me to regularly read your blog.

This post is coming from the ?frustration? (there probably is a less hard word for it) reading on at least 4 people's blogs this week that they are going private.

He decided to wash it. And I just let him go at it while I ran for the camera. I'm such a good mom.

uh huh and no thank you

lately, when Alex has been asking for stuff or even just talking about stuff that he's doing or wants to do he'll say what he wants and follow it with an "uh huh".

So this morning I heard,
"pumkins? uh huh."
"special teet? uh huh."
"animals (dvd). uh huh."
(on the way outside) "ow side. uh huh."
etc.

It's usually repeated several times, as is the usual case with Alex.

This morning we were playing in bed (doing monkeys jumping on the bed) and he'd fall down and sometimes I'd put my legs with my sheet on them over him. After a couple of times of doing so, he told me, "no thank you, mama, blankies".
SO FUNNY!

I got an even better one when we were eating our cereal (which was, of course, eaten from the same bowl since Alex demands it).
I looked over at him and gave him a big cheesy grin and he looked at me and said, "no thank you, mama, happy face." with the utmost seriousness.
Well okay then buddy! No happy faces for you!

Note to self: Don't forget to put markers away!

And oven mitts for mysef

You know, I never really thought of how easy it would be to make oven mitts. AND cool thing... you don't have to have large pieces of fabric to make them. They can be made from scraps!
http://www.michaelmillerfabrics.com/Blog/oven_mitt_pattern.pdf

This is being added to my crafty list over there ---->

Bean Bag chair pattern. And Michael Miller fabrics are awesome. He has some great child prints!
So I know what I'll be making Alex for Christmas!

http://makingitfun.blogspot.com/2008/09/bean-bag-chair.html

Good Job!

That's what Alex said quite loudly, with clapping, after every song today in church. It had me cracking up!
